South Melbourne House

Private Garden

Ayus Botanical reimagines the garden as a vertical sanctuary—five distinct microclimates layered through an inner-city residence where Victorian heritage meets brutalist conviction. In collaboration with Techne Architects, the Ayus Botanical design choreographs living architecture across courtyards, terraces and a private skyline garden, each space calibrated to its own light, texture and rhythm.

At ground level traditional façades are complemented by contemporary planting, including a sculptural Acer palmatum in a simple concrete planter. A central courtyard anchors the home with a commanding Ficus longifolia, its canopy reaching toward mezzanine heights and underplanted with tactile foliage in concrete containers of varying shape and size. Interior plantscaping continues this dialogue—freestanding vessels curated as art pieces, where bold Ficus lyrata and Philodendron selloum frame the library nook and select species animate transitional spaces.

Above, the rooftop terrace becomes a private skyline parkland. Fragrant herbs and culinary species complement outdoor entertaining areas, while hardy native and exotic overplanting in freestanding containers weave around a loose dry riverbed of stone and billet pavers—an organic gesture that softens the architectural rigor. Together these elements conspire with the senses—fragrance, texture and borrowed city views—to create a visceral connection to nature.

Each level tells its own story: from shaded courtyards to sunlit terraces, planting shifts in tone and temperament, evolving with the seasons. South Melbourne House is not simply landscaped; it is composed - a living design that transforms architecture into a sanctuary of light, texture and life.
